Reglan users may want to consider natural remedies

July 27th, 2009 by Jennifer Walker-Journey

People who suffer from heartburn, or diabetic gastroparesis are often prescribed metoclopramide, known in the U.S. by the brand name Reglan, to treat their condition. Recent warnings issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, may make those individuals consider natural alternatives before turning to pharmaceuticals.

Earlier this year the FDA placed a black box warning – the sternest warning it can require –on Reglan after reports of users of Reglan began suffering from a serious and debilitating involuntary movement disorder known as Tardive Dyskinesia. Those who suffer from the condition develop involuntary movements of the muscles, such as lip smacking, tongue thrusting, eye blinking and bulging, head jerking, facial grimacing, puckering and pursing of the lips, and involuntary movements of the fingers.

Those who take Reglan for more than 12 weeks are at greater risk of developing , thus the new labeling advises against long-term use except in rare cases where the benefit outweighs the risks.

Given the black box warning now on Reglan, sufferers of digestive problems may want to turn to old-fashioned, natural alternatives. For example, ginger root aides in digestion and licorice root soothes mucous membranes along the GI tract. Peppermint settles the stomach and aides in the production of saliva. And Rubarb works to rid excessive mucous in the intestines.

Reglan did aid in stomach emptying. However I now have gastroparesis untreatable. Have tried stomach peg. removed because residual remained in stomach. Then j-tube in the jejuneum of small intestines. It developed blockges nd ilieus. IT FELL OUT decided little benefit from it. Major surgery to put back would be high risk due to proufound adhesions. I am
diagnosed with malabsorption and failure to thrive. Infusion therapy lipids 3 times.MCT oil diet now. But became vitamin D deficient and Iron defiency
anemia, already developed pernicious anemia, possible dmylinting sheath, progressive degenerative disease of spine. Every upper GI medical condetion there is in esophogus and stomach and dueodenum.

My daughter went through every surgery, every drug to help her gastroparesis. She even had a stomach pace maker inserted in her stomach. It came down to going to see a pain management doctor. She is now taking Neuronton. It was her miracle drug after being on feeding tubes for 2 years. She is now back to work living a good life again. She was 26 years old when this all happened. Please don't give up keep going to new doctors. So many doctors gave up on her, keep looking the answer is out there.

Reglan actually conceals the symptoms it is causing. As a result, the
symptoms will often only manifest themselves once the patient
    discontinues use of Reglan.
