Tardive Dyskinesia is a neurological syndrome caused by the long-term use of neuroleptic drugs generally prescribed for psychiatric disorders, and some gastrointestinal disorders, such as metoclopramide, commonly known by the brand name Reglan. The condition causes repetitive, involuntary movements that may include grimacing; tongue protrusion; lip smacking, puckering and pursing; and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the fingers, arms, legs and trunk may also occur.

There is no standard treatment for Tardive Dyskinesia. The first step is to stop or minimize the medication that is causing the condition. Symptoms of Tardive Dyskinesia may linger long after discontinuation of the drugs, however with some careful management, some symptoms may improve and/or disappear over time.
